When I founded Standage in 2017, I saw something maddening: brilliant Japanese makers — sake brewers refining their craft over twelve generations, factories producing world-class precision parts, artisans weaving heirloom textiles — were locked out of global commerce. The trade infrastructure didn't fit them. The fees were punishing. The middlemen took everything.

Every product on this site comes from a maker we've personally vetted. Every shipment cuts out layers of traditional trade. Every yen of margin goes back into finding the next great workshop hiding in some prefecture you've never heard of.
